Long perceived as threatening during the history of mankind, the mountain was little by little "tamed" by man, and for a tiny part (1% of the surface of our moutains), developed thanks to technology, thus enabling it to accommodate millions of holidaymakers in “resorts” and villages in search of outdoor recreation in a magnificent natural environment.
Today we are reminded of nature. Global warming is inexorably melting our glaciers, eternal snow disappears, whole sections of rocks are detached, snowfall variations vary widely.
The days of denial and empty rhetoric are over. Hundreds of thousands of jobs in our mountains and valleys depend on it. Our responsibility today is to act. All-round. All together. The mountain deserves our efforts.
For us, ski area operators, this move to action is collective, through a roadmap adopted by all members of the profession, whether private or public.
This approach is reflected in sixteen eco-commitments covering climate issues through an action plan aimed at saving energy and gradually decarbonizing the activity to achieve zero emissions by 2037. It incorporates measures to better manage, save and share the water that we borrow to produce artificial snow in order to compensate for the variability in snow cover. It provides for investments to protect biodiversity and a proactive strategy to preserve landscapes, without forgetting the issue of waste, caused by tourist activity.
These eco-commitments constitute a base on which we wish to co-construct a sustainable development strategy with all the other players in our territories: local elected officials, ski schools, accommodation providers and all professionals, transporters, associations for the protection of the environment and citizens, whether locals or holidaymakers, because we all have a role to play.
Our objective is ambitious: to succeed in the ecological transition of our territories, by consolidating our links with living organisms, by developing our economic models, by helping to improve the quality of life of residents and the experience offered to our customers.
The expected benefits of the measures adopted by the operators of ski lifts and ski areas:
And by 2037, carbon neutrality with zero GHG emissions by ski resort companies.
